Which questions help and which harm

The need to know everything after a betrayal is completely understandable. Yet there is an important distinction: facts that restore your sense of safety help you move forward. Sensory details, such as what it looked like or what was precisely said, do the opposite. They become etched in your mind and make healing harder, not easier.

Why do you actually want to know all the details?

The urge for information is not a weakness. It is your brain's reaction to danger. When something unexpected and painful happens, your head goes looking for control via knowledge. If I know everything, I can understand it. If I understand it, I can come to terms with it.

That is true to some extent. But in my practice, I often see that the need for details does not satisfy itself. Every answer raises a new question. Exactly when? How often? What did you think afterwards? The questions become smaller and at the same time sharper, until you realise that you are no longer looking for peace, but for something that can explain or justify the pain.

That is the moment to take a step back and ask yourself a different question.

The exam question that changes everything

Before asking a question, you can ask yourself the following: does the answer help me to heal?

That sounds simple, but it requires honesty. Some questions we do not ask to heal, but to punish. Or to confirm an image we already have in our heads. Or because sitting still feels more unbearable than searching.

A question such as “How long has this been going on?” or “Does your partner at home know about this person?” may be relevant to the decisions you now have to make. Questions such as “What did he or she look like?” or “What exactly did you feel?” rarely yield anything that helps you move forward. The answer to that second category of questions lingers like an image you cannot shake off.

What facts restore your sense of safety?

There are questions that are legitimate and deserve an answer. These are questions that enable you to assess whether the situation is safe, what is currently going on, and whether there is honesty involved.

Consider questions such as:

Is it over, and is there still contact?

Are there any practical implications I need to know about, such as health or finances?

How long has this been going on?

Was this someone from our immediate circle?

These questions are sometimes painful to ask and to answer. But they are about the reality in which you are living now. They help you determine what your next step is, whether that is recovering or stepping back.

In the blog Why did my partner cheat? And why is no answer helping? I explain why even the question of the “why” often causes more pain than clarity. These insights tie in with this directly.

The more details, the more persistent the images

This is one of the most consistent observations in counselling relating to adultery: people who have been exposed to, or have sought out, graphic sensory details are the ones who suffer the most from it later on. Not from the event itself, but from the images they cannot shake off.

The brain stores emotionally charged information differently than neutral information. Detailed, visual or physical descriptions activate memory in a way that keeps bringing them back. With scents, music, locations, even with ordinary moments at home.

That does not mean that you are not allowed to know anything. It means that you can make choices about what you ask, and that that choice belongs to you.

What if your partner actually wants to tell you everything?

Sometimes it is not the betrayed partner who asks, but the partner who cheated who wants to confess everything. Sometimes out of guilt, sometimes out of the conviction that total honesty is the only way.

In my practice, I’ve found that complete openness without any structure rarely has a healing effect. It can even cause further harm. If you are the one being confronted with a flood of details you didn’t ask for, you are allowed to say that you don’t want to hear that right now. That isn’t denial. It is self-protection.

Bee Reconnect Coaching in the recovery programme we work on the distinction between what is needed to be able to move forward and what only adds pain. That is tailored work, because every situation and every person is different.

Functioning does not mean that everything is going well

Many people I speak to just go to work. They hold meetings, call clients, make decisions. Meanwhile, in the evening, they lie next to someone for whom everything has changed, or are alone with a head full of questions.

If you notice that you keep returning to the same details, the same images, the same questions and there is no peace of mind, that is a signal that you do not have to carry this alone. Especially in the initial phase, guidance can help to determine what you should and should not ask now, and how you deal with the answers you already have. Whether all the details help you is another question. Facts that affect your safety and decision-making are relevant. Sensory details about what physically happened only add difficult-to-process images for most people.

</details>
<details>

What if I don’t know the details but I keep thinking about it anyway?

Your mind fills in blanks, often in the most painful way. That is a normal reaction to uncertainty. It sometimes helps to determine which facts you really need, and to ask for them specifically, rather than continuing to search without direction.

</details>
<details>

My partner wants to tell me everything, but I don't want to hear it. What now?

You may indicate that you do not wish to receive extensive details at this moment. That is not a denial of what has happened. It is a choice about what your head and heart can handle right now. A coach can help to conduct this conversation in a way that works for both of you.

</details>
<details>

Does it help to know details if you want to decide whether to stay or go?

Sometimes, yes. The question is which details. Whether it’s over, whether there’s still contact, whether there are any risks to your health or other practical matters – these are facts that can inform your decision. The physical or emotional details of the affair itself rarely do.

</details>

Petra Wijen is relationship coach and author of the book Adultery.
