The most intense phase is in the first four to six months. Recovery does not follow a straight line but comes in waves: good days alternate with relapses. That is normal, not a sign that things are going wrong.

Is there a realistic timeline?

Yes, and most people need honesty about this. What I often see in my practice: anyone who expects to be stable again after a few weeks gets disappointed and wonders if there is something wrong with them. There is nothing wrong. Infidelity is a profound shock to trust, security and one's sense of self all at once.

A general timeline that aligns with what most people experience:

First weeksacute crisis, sleeping problems, concentration issues, fluctuating emotions. Functioning requires an extraordinary amount of energy.

Months 1 to 3the intense peaks remain, but moments of calm are also coming. Decisions about the relationship present themselves, often sooner than anyone can handle.

Month 3 to 6: slowly gaining a better overview. The question is shifting from What has happened? to what do I want now.

Months 6 to 12more stable periods, but relapsing with triggers such as birthdays, certain places or a chance memory.

Year 1 to 2gradual integration. The past finds its place, it no longer dictates every day.

This timeline applies to people who are actively working through their processing. Anyone who suppresses it or simply waits it out will find that the processing is postponed, not skipped.

Why is it taking so long?

Infidelity doesn't touch just one thing. It touches the past, the present and the future all at once.

The past changes colour: moments that felt good are revisited. The present is unstable: the partner who always felt like home now feels strange. The future is uncertain: the plan that was in place no longer exists in the same form.

On top of that, adultery almost always raises questions about one's own sense of self. Why wasn't I enough? What does this say about me? Those questions are understandable but cloud the processing, because they seek answers that are not there. In the blog Why did my partner cheat? And why is no answer helping? it is explained why searching for that explanation often causes more anxiety than peace.

Recovery in waves: what does that actually mean?

A good day does not mean that it is over. A bad day does not mean that everything starts all over again.

Recovery after infidelity works with peaks and troughs. A triggering situation, a bad night's sleep, a comment from someone outside the relationship, and the feeling is suddenly just as raw as in week one. That is not a relapse in the clinical sense. It is simply what the road to recovery looks like.

What helps in those moments: knowing that it's part of the process. Not reinterpreting every peak as proof that things will never get better. In my practice, I see that people who understand this get through the lows more quickly than those who experience every relapse as a failure.

What determines how long it takes?

There are factors that influence the processing time. Not all of them are controllable, but it helps to know them.

What extends the processing time:

Making decisions from acute panic in the first hours or days

Cyberstalking an ex or endlessly scrolling through painful memories (reading old messages, looking up photos) without gaining any resolution

Social isolation or the exact opposite: involving everyone in the surroundings

Lack of structure in daily life

Persistent sleep deprivation

What shortens the processing time:

Engage professional guidance early

Creating calm for the first major decisions

Distinguishing between what is urgent now and what can wait

Protecting basic physical needs: sleep, food, exercise

This last point sounds simple but is underestimated. The body processes things too. Anyone who neglects the body makes mental processing harder.

Why are the first 48 hours so crucial?

The first 48 hours after the discovery of infidelity are the most dangerous for the long term. Not because anything irreparable necessarily has to happen immediately, but because the risk of making decisions out of panic is highest then.

I see this time and time again: confrontations that escalate, messages that are sent, people who are informed, decisions that are pronounced, all at a moment when the brain is literally in survival mode. Those decisions are difficult to reverse later on and significantly prolong the processing time.

The blog Cheating partner: what to do and what not to do in the first 48 hours addresses this specifically. Reading it takes ten minutes and can save a lot of damage later.

Repairing or taking apart: does the outcome make a difference to the processing time?

That is a question I hear regularly. The answer is nuanced.

Whether someone restores the relationship or respectfully ends it, in both cases processing is needed. Anyone who breaks up processes the loss of the relationship as well as the adultery. Anyone who stays works on restoring trust and on their own pain. Neither path is necessarily shorter.

What actually matters: whether the choice was made consciously, with a clear overview, and not out of panic or external pressure. A conscious choice, however difficult, provides a firmer foundation for the processing time that follows.

Reconnect Coaching does not focus on the outcome. Repairing the relationship and parting ways respectfully are both valuable outcomes. What matters is that the journey towards it is travelled consciously and with sufficient support. You can read more about what that looks like in practice on the page Adultery Recovery Project.

When is professional help needed?

It's always allowed, sometimes it's really necessary.

If sleep problems, loss of concentration or emotional exhaustion persist for more than a few weeks in a way that seriously hinders daily functioning, it is advisable to consult a GP or psychologist in addition to coaching. Coaching and therapy are not mutually exclusive.

For people who function outwardly but are on edge at home, this distinction is especially relevant. Functioning at work, keeping appointments, making decisions: they can still manage it all. But that says nothing about how things are on the inside. Functioning does not mean that things are well.

If you find yourself in that situation, Reconnect Coaching offers guidance with complete discretion, flexible hours and, if desired, an NDA. That is not a fixed limit. Some people experience peace sooner, others need more time. What matters is the direction, not the speed.

Can I get over infidelity without knowing why my partner did it?

Yes. An explanation sometimes helps, but is not a prerequisite for processing. Many people find peace without having received an answer that truly satisfied them. Processing is ultimately about your path, not about the motives of the other person.

My partner is sorry and wants to make amends. Does that speed up the process?

It helps, but it doesn't resolve the processing. The partner's remorse is a prerequisite for the restoration of the relationship, not for your own processing process. Those two run parallel, but are not the same thing.

I function just fine at work, but at home everything is falling apart. Is that problematic?

No, that is relatable for many people, especially entrepreneurs and professionals. The ability to function is not proof that things are going well. It is rather a sign that the pressure is landing somewhere else. Guidance can help to bring those two worlds closer together.

When do I know if I need help?

If thoughts of the affair still dominate every day after weeks, if you no longer know what you feel or want, or if you find yourself postponing decisions because everything feels like a loss: those are moments when guidance makes a tangible difference.

About the author

Petra Wijen is a relationship coach and author of the book Adultery.
