Whether it is realistic depends not on intentions or promises, but on concrete behaviour. In my practice, I see that recovery is viable if your partner is completely honest, has broken off contact with the third party and is willing to actively work on the recovery. Without that foundation, you are building on shifting sands.

Why the question ‘will I ever be able to trust again?’ is so difficult

Following the discovery of infidelity, almost everyone asks themselves the same question: am I kidding myself if I stay? That question is not weak. It is an honest and necessary question. Trust is not just a matter of feeling. It is a conclusion you reach based on what you see, hear and experience in the weeks and months following the crisis.

The problem is that your brain doesn't work clearly in that first phase. One day you want to understand everything, the next day you want to leave. That back-and-forth is normal. But it makes it difficult to judge whether recovery is realistic or whether you're ignoring your own signals.

Behavioural signs that recovery is promising

Recovery does not start with fine words. It starts with behaviour that is consistent over time. In my practice, I see that the following signs indicate that recovery is a real possibility.

Your partner is completely honest, even when you don't ask for it

A partner who takes recovery seriously does not wait until you ask the right questions. They offer openness of their own accord: about where they have been, with whom, and what was exchanged. That feels uncomfortable for both. But that willingness to be transparent without pressure from your side is one of the strongest signals that someone is taking responsibility.

Contact with the third party has been completely and demonstrably severed

This sounds like a statement of the obvious, but in practice it isn't always. Cutting off contact doesn't just mean stopping meeting up. It also means: no longer following on social media, no more messages, no ‘friendly checking in to see how things are going’. If there is a professional relationship that is difficult to completely break off, that calls for a concrete approach that you create together. Restoring half-hearted contact is not restoration.

Your partner is actively asking for guidance and has not withdrawn that request

A willingness to seek help – and to maintain that willingness even once the initial pain has subsided somewhat – is a reliable sign. In my practice, I regularly see that the motivation of the partner who has been unfaithful wanes as soon as the immediate crisis feels less acute. Anyone who remains committed to the process even after those first few weeks is showing that they are serious.

Signs that recovery is not realistic at this moment

Just as you don't have to force yourself to stay, you don't have to force yourself to believe in recovery when the signs don't support it.

Honesty comes reluctantly or in stages after pressure

When every new revelation only comes to light after you have discovered something, that is a pattern. Honesty in dribs and drabs is not honesty. It prolongs the pain and makes it practically impossible to move forward on a stable footing. Why did my partner cheat on me? I describe how the search for explanations often comes to a standstill as long as the facts themselves have not yet been laid out.

Your partner downplays, defends or shifts the blame

Phrases such as ‘it was only once’, ‘you weren’t always there either’ or ‘you shouldn’t make such a fuss about it now’ are not trivial. They show that someone is not taking full responsibility. Without that responsibility, there is no foundation for recovery.

Contact with the third person continues or is unclear

If you don't know whether contact has been cut off, or if your partner indicates that it's ‘not that simple’, that is a problem that requires immediate attention. Not in a month. Now.

To stay or to go: either option can be a good outcome

At Reconnect Coaching, I don’t focus on the outcome of your relationship. Whether you and your partner choose to stay together or to part ways respectfully: both can be the right choice. What I do see, however, is that this choice becomes clearest when you don’t make a decision in a panic, but from a position of clarity.

You do not get that overview by waiting and hoping. You get it by looking at what is actually happening, by taking your own boundaries seriously, and sometimes by involving someone from the outside who has no vested interest in a particular outcome.

It Adultery Recovery Project Reconnect Coaching is there for couples who want to explore whether repair is possible.

Functioning while wearing this is something else than being well. If you have everything together on the outside but everything internally is on high alert, then that is precisely the moment when guidance yields the most.

Would you like to know where you stand? A introductory meeting via /kennismaking/ is non-binding and gives you a much better overview than weeks of just grinding away.

Veelgestelde vragen

<details>

How long does it take to rebuild trust after an affair?

There is no fixed timeframe. In my practice I see that people experience genuine recovery after six to eighteen months, but that depends heavily on how consistently both partners work on transparency and recovery. Imposing a timeline is counterproductive.

</details>
<details>

Can I trust my partner when they say it will never happen again?

A promise alone is not a basis for trust. Trust is built through behaviour over time. What your partner says matters less than what they consistently do in the weeks and months following the discovery.

</details>
<details>

Is it normal that one day I want to stay and the next day I want to leave?

Yes, that’s normal and happens to almost everyone after discovering an affair. Your brain is processing a major shock, and that process isn’t linear. It doesn’t mean you can’t make a good decision. It means you need time and space to do so.

</details>
<details>

What if my partner says they want to make things right but take little action?

Words and actions that do not match are an important signal. If that gap persists after multiple conversations, it is wise to enlist professional guidance. This will make it clear whether there is unwillingness, inability, or something else that needs attention.

</details>
<details>

When is it sensible to seek professional help?

As soon as possible after you realise that your conversations keep going round in circles, or if either of you doesn’t feel safe enough to be open. Taking action early on prevents patterns from becoming entrenched, which are much harder to break later on.

</details>

Petra Wijen is relationship coach and author of the book Adultery.
